Hello, and welcome to The Llama Farmers’ blog. We’ll be bringing you news from the farm and updating you on our progress as we diversify. We hope you’ll stick around, through the good, the bad and the muck heap.
Without any further ado, let us introduce ourselves…
In Denbighshire, amidst the Berwyn Mountains, we run a small sustainability conscious, non-intensive farm. Recent events have prompted many livestock farmers, including ourselves, to re-examine the way they do business. We decided to diversify and explore alternative sources of revenue, by cutting out the middlemen and selling direct to customers. Our new ventures include fresh meat boxes (Welsh Lamb, Beef & Pork) and some other unannounced projects.
“Why Bolivian?”, you may ask. The answer being, my father, who is Bolivian, married my mother, the daughter of a Welsh farmer, and together they became the 5th generation to take on the family farm.
As far as the Welsh farming community goes, Bolivian farmers are few and far between. The same can be said for Andean quadrupeds in North Wales. When we introduced the llamas to the farm 15 years ago, little did we know that they would become the key feature of our brand identity. We recruited them for their natural shepherding abilities, but they’ve since become part of the family, further solidifying our links to the Andes.
Uncertainty about future British trade deals and the possible impact this could have on food standards and animal welfare, has started many conversations about where food comes from. We see this as an opportunity to adapt our business, so that we can continue to provide high-welfare, sustainably produced food for local people for years to come.
